A Number of Hurt as Turbulence Strikes A Delta Airlines Aircraft into Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals have been injured after a Delta jet traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by turbulence Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier informed. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Local paramedics stated they evaluated a total of five people, and transported three to hospital with minor injuries that comprised back pain and headaches. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

This marks the newest example of planes encountering atmospheric disturbance, with aviation specialists indicating that climate change is a key driver.

There were nearly 250 travelers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the representative noted, adding that the plane arrived "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

Paramedics reported they were alerted just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane touched down, and emergency vehicles were ready and waiting at the airport.

The reasons turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "severe" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the lengthy trip, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

Recently, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a terrifying brief five-second period of extreme instability. One passenger passed away and numerous people sustained injuries, as individuals not fastened in were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence during flights, and while cases of strong or severe turbulence appear to be increasing, they are statistically infrequent.

Data suggests that there are approximately five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence every year, out of a total of over 35 million aircraft departures that now take off globally.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the sudden jolts of a aircraft passing through rough air masses apply more than a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.

As climate change shifts the conditions in the sky, researchers alert that flying could become less smooth: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the upper atmosphere are expected to heighten the regularity and severity of significant turbulence.
