British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
