Iran's military claims to have hit a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched strikes across the region in retaliation for a significant and ongoing attack against it by the United States and Israeli forces.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an vicinity close to the main base of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The scope of any impact is uncertain and the United States has not commented.

Missile Defenses Activated

In other parts of the Middle East, the UAE, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - all home to US military bases - reported they have intercepted missiles in their airspace.

In Doha, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had successfully engaged several missiles apparently targeting the al-Udeid air base, the biggest US military installation in the region.

IRGC Statement

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement it was striking American facilities and interests as part of operation "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the offensive on Iran initiated by the US and Israel on Saturday.

That US-Israeli operation - launched at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far targeted locations linked to the Tehran's leadership, with US President Donald Trump encouraging the people of Iran to rise up against the government.

Regional Fallout

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israeli military said it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The defence ministry of the UAE said in a statement that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses engaged the projectiles with notable success and destroyed a number of missiles," the statement continued.

Officials reported wreckage fell on a neighborhood in the capital, resulting in some material damage and killing a civilian.

The United States Air Force is stationed at the Al Dhafra base, south of the Emirati capital, along with the UAE Air Force.
