Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
