Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He contested the law and justice won.
A couple of months following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.
Expected Incarceration
The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his residence while a series of judicial steps and challenges play out – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amid increasing speculation that he will be sent to a well-known top-security prison.
Past Statements on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former soldier displayed scant compassion for Brazil’s inmates.
“What’s the need to give these dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, period. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to finish in prison, all you have to do is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”
Prison Destination Debate
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week toured the facility in an seeming bid to prevent the high court from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he predicted the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the last political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is extremely serious. He cannot to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also worried about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding four dozen prisoners: “It's virtually one square meter per prisoner.
“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.
Supporters Voice Concerns
Lucas is not the only voice expressing views prior to the former president’s expected imprisonment.
Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its history”.
“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of countless of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided General Opinion
This could be correct considering the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his predicted incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions individuals who think he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and also plotting to have him killed.
The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's political party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain respectful care – but dignified care behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the severe handling of convicts, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights should not be for offenders – opted to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he said.
“He is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning conduct”.
Likely Incarceration Environment
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of prisoners, his more likely assigned facility seems to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning leader's home, about 12 miles away.
As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a TV and also a small fridge in his room as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” information indicated.
Partisan Comments
He denounced the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will rule on his fate in the {
