Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks after Denver's remarkable 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
