Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Support Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot conceded that it's understandable for questions to be raised about his future following a further heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 games, marking the team's worst streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received a lot of backing from management,” Slot commented.
“It would be nice to change things and get a victory of course but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to expand on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me every single minute each day to say they back me.”
He added, “During our regular conversations we have I feel the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them after this match yet so it remains to be seen.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted known failings from his team in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don't have to wait to think about it. I'm beyond getting mad inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the club I love. I support them, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team experiencing a phase such as this with results this poor.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And until it is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to the top, prove once more what this club is about and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
