The domestic football league rivalry match between one local team and Hapoel Tel Aviv was called off before the start on the weekend, after what authorities characterized as "public disorder and serious disturbances".
"Many of smoke grenades and pyrotechnic devices were launched," Israeli police announced on online platforms, emphasizing "this isn't a match, this is unrest and serious violence".
A dozen people and multiple police personnel were harmed, officials confirmed, while multiple persons were arrested and numerous others detained for questioning.
The clashes come just a short time after representatives in the Britain said that followers of the club ought to be banned to attend the international tournament match at the English club in England next month because of security issues.
Hapoel Tel Aviv condemned the game abandonment, accusing law enforcement of "getting ready for a conflict, rather than a football match", including during meetings in the preparation to the much-expected match.
"The shocking incidents near the venue and after the reckless and scandalous judgment to cancel the match only demonstrate that the Israel Police has seized authority in the game," the club announced publicly.
The other team has declined to speak, except to confirm the match was cancelled.
The decision by the local safety committee to exclude club followers from the Birmingham game on 6 November has triggered widespread criticism.
The UK government has subsequently stated it is attempting to reverse the ban and considering what extra measures might be required to ensure the fixture can be conducted securely.
Villa told their stadium staff that they could choose not to participate at the fixture, saying they acknowledged that some "may have concerns".
On Thursday, law enforcement confirmed it endorsed the ban and categorized the fixture as "concerning" according to information and previous incidents.
That encompassed "physical confrontations and discrimination incidents" involving the Dutch team and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans before a game in the Netherlands in November 2024, when numerous persons were detained.
There have been rallies at multiple sporting events concerning the situation in Gaza, such as when the national team competed against the Scandinavian team and Italy in current qualification games.
