The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
