Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
